We encourage our members to bring to the shed & show the boys something they have made in the past & are proud of, so John Mills brought this model  pressure blaster in to show us .

It is a scale model of a 150hp Pressure Blaster working at 15,000psi using 12 gallons/min. & used to cut concrete & clean drains.

To make this unit he used 4 tyres from a toy, sheets of modelling polystyrene,  balsa wood. copper wire,  also a broken rear light & indicator. He made the other parts he needed on his home lathe.

The scale was determined by the size of the toy tyres & took about 4 months to make as the parts became available. He also re-made some components that did not look right. 

Above is the actual machine the model is based on.

 It has since been painted completely black. 

 

On Monday 29^th June our shed once again hosted the before & after school care children from Woosh.

We had intended to have them make a small pre-cut tray, but they asked if they could make their own jigsaw as they did last time some of them came.

As can be seen on the video they all had a ball because they could cut out their own shapes on the scroll saws, (under supervision of course).

Some then made the tray we had prepared, while others wanted to make a leather key ring with our resident leather craft expert Ross Jenkins.

Then as usual it was a race by the boys to make the usual weapons of mass destruction.

Woosh greatly appreciated our boy’s efforts & gave the Shed a very nice donation.

The video opens with 3 of the supervision team trying to piece together a simple 10 piece jigsaw.

 You should have asked the kids how to do it fellas!

Seems like billy carts are back in favour so Ross decided to make one for his grandson.

Being an old timer he made it to the same design as the ones he had when he was a kid with brakes & all.

He would not sit in it to have his picture taken so Graham volunteered.

Because it didn't break with him sitting in it we would say it's almost indestructible;

 so no worries with the grandson Ross!! 

As a topic of interest at morning tea, it was suggested a member may wish to show & discuss something they have made or achieved that they are proud of. They could  bring in the actual articles or photos & inform the men the way it was made, problems encountered, time involved etc. 

The idea has been quite successful so far as a few items have been brought in that will be published for viewing at a later date. 

David Prescott is involved with an active Dragon Boat racing team so he brought in some of the personal medals he has won. As seen below, included in his tally are Gold, Silver & Bronze medals of which he is very proud .

We're at it again

Once more we were called upon to refurbish a Surf Reel.

This time it was for the Toowoon Bay SLSC Nippers.

The idea is for the nippers to carry this reel during the parades they participate in. It will also be their responsibility to look after something of value which is part of their training.

The reel was in a pretty bad state when brought to us.

 

Peter & Ron knew what had to be done so they rolled up their sleeves, dismantled the reel & attacked the many coats of paint on the timber frame & reel with gusto. They had a bit of help from other members for this tedious job including Peter’s son. When it was satisfactory to Ron’s standards he took them home to paint (away from the dust etc in the Shed).

 

   

They stripped the paint off what they thought was a metal frame &  were surprised to find it was brass tubing. After discussion with the Surf Club & some good advice from the members it was decided to have all the components chromed. New cedar slats were made for the drum portion of the reel.
