Another large project we undertook was a set of outdoor bench seating for the Berkeley Vale Community Garden. After helping them gain the necessary funding from C.C.Council we were given the go ahead to make them to their special requirements. 
It was a shed community effort with the boys in the metal shop (Clive Tubnor, Steve Sinclair & John Mills) manufacturing the galvanized frame & Bryan Frendin Tom Green & a few others cutting & fitting the slats & finally John Devenport (our paint everything expert) doing the paintwork.  
The result was a fine set of benches anyone would be proud of.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT                         Date 07/08/2018   

1. Welcome  to our 9^th Annual General Meeting                   

We have 2 special guests attending this morning John Sharples & Kylie Frazer. John is representing AMSA NSW, Zone 8. He is our ex-president & one of the founding members of this shed                                                                                                                                                                                 Kylie is General Manager/Operations representing ADSSI Home Living                                       

 We all need to acknowledge the aid & support we receive from ADSSI Home Living Australia. This is their building & they lease it to us at a extremely low annual rent. They also support us in numerous other ways & have just made a donation of $400 which helped with the purchase of an inverter welder                    

 As we enter our 9^th  year of operation  our outlook for the future is more than promising.                   Your committee will continue improving & updating workshop machinery & purchasing upmarket consumables to make life a bit easier for everyone.                                                                                                

We haven’t lost many members this year but there has been a lot illnesses. We endeavor to keep in contact with these members & it is good to see other shedders willing to visit them to offer help & support to the immediate family. These families have been astounded by the support offered by fellow shedders                                                                                                                                                                          We have had numerous invitations to participate functions this year. Some have just wanted us to be there to make up their numbers while others have been too far away. We did however attend an aged well being event  & have spread information about the Men’s shed movement verbally & via editorials etc.            

We have supported the Samaritan’s Purse for children for 9 years now but this year the committee decided to support the training of guide dogs for the blind with a substantial donation of $500. 

  Through Graham Craike’s association with native wildlife associations he has made numerous animal shelters & bird nesting boxes which are good source of income for us.

We currently have a financial membership of 67 of 123 members with an average daily attendance of 25.   This shows the importance this Shed has for many men in our community.  

Submit financial report                                                                This year there needs to be serious discussion on succession planning for the future as other members have to step up in participates in the running of the shed.

I wish to thank the outgoing executive and committee for their efforts & help during the year and especially their willingness to accept responsibility in their various rolls.  

To the Administration Graham Craike, Richard Howison, Peter Crabbie, & the general committee, John Mills, Clive Tubnor, Ron Belshaw, Alex Lee, & John Innis my sincere thanks. The eagerness of you all to be involved in running the Shed has been invaluable.

 We all know what John Innis contributes to the shed & his tireless efforts need special thanks from all the members  

I now declare all positions vacant & wish the incoming Executive and Committee a successful year with the knowledge the Shed has policies in place that will make the transition as easy as possible.                            Would the returning officer please take the chair.

As can be seen in past posts, one of our members Ros Jenkin's hobby is making various items from leather. He normally enters the Royal Easter Show with whips, hat bands, knife pouches & the like with great success. 
He made this whip & generously donated it to the Shed to raffle. After discussion with the members we came to the conclusion we would not raise anywhere near the whips true value. With approval from Ross it was decided to pass it on to the PCYC as they hold regular fund raising events & would be able to achieve an amount  nearer to it's true value. It was disappointing to see it went for $200 but at least it is money the PCYC never had the day before.

 

As in the past, every year we endeavour to select a different charity for cash donations. This year the members decided to support the training of Guide Dogs for the blind with a generous donation of $500 from Shed funds. 
We also found our way clear to donate to the Country Womens Association for the farmers & townfolk who are doing it tough. 
The Shed came up with $2500 & the members raised an additional $520 from their own pockets making a total of $3020. 
Through the C.W A we found that rather than just supporting the farmers, anyone in a drought declared area (including townfolk) can apply for aid by supplying  legitimate accounts needing payment & the money is forwarded to them.

This is the first experimental swarm box we made for

The idea is to attract bees & encourage them to make a temporary

hive which can be transported to a more suitable location where they can be re-housed. 

The short video shows the activity in & around the box which is far better than expected

 

As well as supporting our local schools we have now linked up with Armidale Public School.
Some of John Mills family live up there & he was asked if we could make a small Library Book Box to be installed in the playground. They only wanted it undercoated as the children would decorate it themselves. We obliged & some results can be seen in the photos. They also gave us a donation in appreciation.

 

WE do our upmost to support important charities.
In the past we have raised funds & given to The Cancer Council $850, The Prostate Cancer Appeal $1250 as well as support for our local schools.
We have supported the Samaritan’s Purse for children for 9 consecutive years. Last year we donated $750 for transport costs of containers overseas. 
This year the committee decided to support the training of guide dogs for the blind with a substantial donation of $500.

Here it is ...Our new Pride & Joy

After a couple of attempts for funding from the government grants via AMSA we finally cracked it & bought this new Deluxe Router Table.

 It will replace the old one we had & is much more upmarket & easier to use. 

The old router table was handed on to Mannering Park (Manno) Men's Shed who were very grateful for the donation as they didn't have one. We also supplied them with a Makita router to suit the table.

 A big thank you to the Federal Government (Health) for their continued support of Men's Sheds & to AMSA for passing on the   funding needed to purchase this machine.

 

Being the professionals we are at making beehives the word is out that we can make anything relating to beekeeping. 
In that light we were asked to tackle a Kenyan style beehive.
 It needed to be made from at least 25mm thick hardwood planks & a pitched roof for ventilation.. It also needed numerous horizontal slats for the bees to build the combs on.
After we sourced the timber the ever reliable Bryan Frendin & a couple of others got stuck into it. As can be seen in the photos there was quite a bit of work in it but on completion it was exactly what the client required. If it works successfully we're sure  others will want to follow suit.
